Project Background
In the early 20th century, The M.D. Martin Carriage Works Co. was Central Pennsylvania’s largest builder of horse-drawn carriage bodies. Their base of operations was the Carriage Works Building in York. During the automobile industry, The Martin Company adapted their business by building truck bodies, and eventually sold it to General Motors. By the 1930s, this huge brick complex was vacant, and although the building was used by various businesses through the decades since its closure, the vast majority of the 136,000 square feet was abandoned and left in various stages of decay.
The Witmer Group later teamed with Ingerman Construction and PFG Capital to rescue the building from the wrecking ball and transform it into a beautiful, livable apartment complex poised for the next chapter of its long life. The masonry work required great care and patience to refurbish the original openings and brick sign sections. Over 40,000 original bricks were cleaned and reused to restore the beauty, symmetry, and industrial elegance of the original structure. The success of this restoration project is a tribute to the talents and dedication of the entire team.
