“Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.”
Nick, a committed masonry restoration apprentice, exemplifies passion and perseverance in every project he contributes to. With an eagerness to learn and grow, he continually pursues new techniques and methods, honing his skills and expanding his knowledge in the field of restoration. His dedication to preserving history is evident in the thorough care he puts into each project he works on. Nick embarked on his journey in the trade industry from a young age, starting in high school where he attended a technical school in pursuit of finding his connection with a trade. Initially, he was drawn to auto mechanics to hone his hands-on skills. With his mechanical background, in 2011 Nick transitioned to becoming a machine operator at a prominent battery manufacturing plant, overseeing operations, maintenance, and leading a large team for over a decade. Nick’s varied experiences and interests prompted him to seek a career shift. Encouraged by his sister-in-law, he applied to The Witmer Group in pursuit of a role that would leverage his skills and offer new opportunities. In 2021, Nick joined The Witmer Group as a restoration technician. Transitioning careers after a decade can be intimidating, yet Nick embraced the change with optimism and openness to a new work environment. Despite lacking prior field experience, he accepted the challenge, committed to working hard and striving for excellence. His initial project encompassed a variety of tasks, from renovating a fountain to mastering new techniques. Reflecting on his journey, Nick humorously admits, “I had no idea what was going on with anything!” Nick highlights how he acquired new skills, practiced patience, and dedicated time to learning the craft, attributing his progress to the supportive crew. While reflecting on his time at Witmer, Nick expresses his enjoyment of both the craft and the camaraderie he experiences here. “Everyone I work with here is enjoyable to work with. I haven’t had anyone I don’t get along with,” stated Nick warmly. He continues, “The personality of the company is different than most; here you are recognized for the work you do and are appreciated.” When asked about what draws him to restoration work, Nick states “I would say the craftsmanship. That is why I love restoration. It is artistic, detail-oriented…you’re taking a building that is run down and turning it into what it was when it was new,” he explains with a sense of pride. Despite the challenges, Nick is quick to add, “It’s hard work, but I like the fact that you get to see something return to what it once was.” Throughout his career, Nick was fortunate to have mentors who guided and shaped his professional journey. “I would attribute my growth to Clarence Trump, who has remained my foreman for most of my time here. I genuinely will say he has shown me a lot. From learning the masonry trade to understanding the whole job in general, knowing how to run the job, get it done, what the customer is looking for, and what we are looking for” stated Nick. Currently, Nick is completing his third year in The Witmer Group’s apprenticeship program in preparation for graduation in May. Looking toward the future of his career, Nick would like to continue to enhance his skills with the goal to reach the position of a foreman. “Nick is a pleasure to work with. His positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond make him a standout team member,” stated Scott Pence, General Superintendent. Nick currently resides in Manheim, PA with his wife. In his free time, he enjoys riding his dirt bike-trail riding, attending car shows, and spending quality time with his friends and wife. Congratulations, Nick, on being The March Team Member Spotlight! Thank you for your hard work and dedication.
