The Power of Witmer Coatings

January 17, 2025 - Written by: Jenna Kianka

Built to Endure: A York, PA Facility Gets a Heavy-Duty Floor Makeover

When Witmer Coatings was challenged to breathe new life into this decommissioned shop room floor, we knew it wouldn’t be easy—but we don’t back down from a challenge. Armed with the right tools and expertise, we delivered a stunning transformation that speaks for itself.  We utilized diamond grinders, chipper hammers, shot blasters, mortar, urethane cement, and epoxy to effectively tackle the wear and damage The result? A seamless, industrial-grade finish that’s built to endure.

Firstly, we had to identify what the room used to be, and what it was going to become.  The original floor, located in a shop in York, PA, was an acid plating room.  What that told us is that there are likely inert contaminants that may impact the composition of our primer.  The room’s new purpose is going to be warehousing.  This let us know we should expect heavy tow motor traffic, but not aggressive manufacturing processes like acid plating.

To address the potential of substrate contamination, we primed the floor using a thin-film urethane cement scratch coat.  Urethane cement has exceptional chemical resistance, and can tolerate contaminated surfaces at a much higher rate than the epoxy.  And to improve the adhesion for the next application, we seeded the thin film urethane cement with quartz sand.

The existing floor was a hybrid of substrates – acid brick, epoxy mortar, and concrete.  These variety of floors and elevations called for a heavy-duty build of industrial products.  We leveled the floor with a self-leveling urethane cement.  Then we installed a self-leveling epoxy.  And to tolerate the weight and movement of forklifts, a hard wearing aliphatic urethane top coat.

The before photo shows a worn, tired surface. The after reveals a durable, polished floor that’s clean, functional, and ready for action.

At Witmer Coatings, we don’t just upgrade surfaces—we redefine them.

If you’re manufacturing plant is in Lancaster, York, or anywhere else in Pennsylvania, contact us for an industrial flooring system suited for your operation.
